Armies of Oerth, Part XX: Onnwal
Using the Field of Glory wargaming rules & Dragon Magazine #57, here is the latest installment of Gary Gygax's Orders of Battle for certain renowned armies from the World of Greyhawk.
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
Onnwal's Army List
Onnwal was originally a lesser fief of the Herzog of South Province, to be granted as he saw fit to his faithful followers. The oppressive rule of the Great Kingdom brought great discontent and instigated open rebellion, the whole of the South Province being in arms. All of the lower portion was lost to the empire when the Iron League was founded. Onnwal and Irongate supplied the sea power, while the other members furnished troops for land actions. Irongate was besieged by Aerdian forces for several months, but in the battle of a Thousand Banners the siege was lifeted when a ruse panicked the northerners, and great numbers of them were subsequesntly slain by a combined host of men and Gray Elves of the League. While never invaded, Onnwal is subjeet to periodic sea raids from the Herzog's squadrons. The major port of Scant is exceptionally well fortified because of this fact.
Commander-in-Chief: Count Szek Elverd, of the House of Destan
(F 12th level) = 1 base

(3 models/base; foot troops, helm & chest armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Armies of Oerth, Part XIX: Irongate & Iron Hills
Using the Field of Glory wargaming rules & Dragon Magazine #57, here is another installment of Gary Gygax's Orders of Battle for certain renowned armies from the World of Greyhawk.
Some further army information was provided from the World of Greyhawk Gazetteer.
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
Irongate's Army List
This large and thriving city is based on sea commerce and trade between Onnwal and the east. Irongate developed an independent spirit early in its history due to its minglng of peoples and ideas. As the rule of the Overking grew more despotic, the people of the city began to murmur, and the Lord Mayor headed a deputation bearing grievances to the Herzog. These emissaries were thrown into prison, given a mock trial, and executed by ritual torture for the Overking’s entertainment. The following year the whole of the south was in arms against the realm, and after a brief struggle the Iron League was founded, an alliance of mutual support which aided the rebellious states to throw off the yoke of the Aerdi tyrants. Irongate has a strong naval squadron and a large company of armored infantry in League service. Cobb Darg is using all of his efforts to heal the breach between Idee and Dwarfking Holgi Hirsute, for a united front will certainly be more able to withstand the expected onslaught of the Provinces of the Great Kingdom.
Commander-in-Chief: Cobb Darg, Lord High Mayor

These troops can effectively defend Irongate, and are available to aid the demi-humans of the Iron Hills should the need arise and no direct threat to the Free City is being posed.
Although Gygax does give an estimated number for the dwarven and gnomish troops of the Iron Hills, he doesn't give a specific breakdown of their forces. Using some of the previous army lists as a guide, here is a speculative breakdown of their army.

Armies of Oerth, Part XVIII: Idee
Using the Field of Glory wargaming rules & Dragon Magazine #57, here's another installment of Gary Gygax's Orders of Battle for certain renowned armies from the World of Greyhawk.
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
Idee's Army List
Count Fedorik Eddri has developed the trade of his realm to a point where the populace are prosperous and happy. However, more revenues should have been expended in fortification, however, for the line of strongholds along the northern border of Idee are not fully manned and not in perfect repair. Lulled into a false sense of security, Idee was ill-prepared for the strength and force of the South Province's army. As Fedorik mustered an unready army of 6,000 men, the timely assistance of Dwarfking Holgi Hirsute chased the Herzog's forces back. Unfortunately, a rift has developed between the Count and the Dwarfking. There is no question the defending army of the Iron League will be badly outnumbered due to the rupture, but the Iron Hills are still relatively secure against invasion even though Holgi Hirsute stands separately from the allies.
Commander-in-Chief: Count Fedorik Eddri (F 14th level) = 1 base
Heavy Cavalry: 1,000 = 4 bases
(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)
Medium Cavalry: 2,000 = 8 bases
(3 models/base; riders on horses, helm & chest armour, moderate shields, hand weapons)
Light Cavalry (Mercenary): 1,000 = 4 bases
(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)
Medium Infantry: 3,000 = 12 bases
(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
Medium Infantry (Mercenary): 2,000 = 8 bases
(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
Light Infantry (Levied): 5,000 = 20 bases
(3 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)
This totals 57 bases with 165 models on them.
It is expected the following allies will join the Count, since Dwarfking Holgi refuses to leave the Iron Hills:
Medium Infantry (Dwarves): 2,000 = 8 bases
(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
Light Infantry (Gnomes): 1,000 = 4 bases
(3 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)
This totals an additional 12 bases with 36 models on them.

Armies of Oerth, Part XVII: Sunndi
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
Sunndi's Army List
The County of Sunndi was once a fief within a fief, being granted to a loyal peer of the Overking's Herzog of the South Province of the Great Kingdom. After a long period of oppressive taxation, maltreatment by royal troops and those of the Herzog as well, they eventually rebelled and joined the general uprising against Aerdian rule. The county is well protected by natural barriers which enable it to be defended - the dense Rieuwood and hills to east and west. It is threatened continually from the north by the Herzog's legions, from the east by the forces of the Holy Censor of Medegia, and by the Sea Barons along its coasts.
Commander-in-Chief: Count Hazendel
(C 5th level/F 8th level/MU 8th level) = 1 base

Armies of Oerth, Part XVI: South Province
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
South Province's Army List
The ruler of South Province, Herzog Chelor III, a cousin of the Overking in Rauxes, is in disfavour. All previous attempts to regain the lost portions of the fief have been turned back in defeat, and the revenue coming to the Malachite Throne have diminished considerably, for the lost territories were rich indeed. Thus the Herzog has stated the intent to stake his entire personal fortune on a last attempt to break the Iron League. Success would make his title something more than hot air, regain favour for him in Rauxes, swell his coffers to bursting with wealth, and lastly giving much personal satisfaction to him. He has currently gathered a force which may well be sufficient to accomplish what none of the Herzog's ancestors could ever manage to do - regain Idee and spell the end of the Iron League, for the defenders cannot gather a force so large to oppose Chelor.
Commander-in-Chief: Herzog Chelor III
(T 5th level/F 11th level) = 1 base
Sub-Commander: General Reynard = 1 base
Heavy Cavalry: 3,000 = 12 bases

Armies of Oerth, Part XV: Bone March
Using the Field of Glory wargaming rules & Dragon Magazine #57, I will continue representing Gary Gygax's Orders of Battle for certain renowned armies from the World of Greyhawk.
These army lists are abit more subjective. The only army layout provided by Gygax was for the Orcs of the Vile Rune. The other two lists are based on comments from the article, brief blurbs from the World of Greyhawk Gazetteer & 1E Monster Manual, and some comparative army structure from Field of Glory supplement books.
Ratio: 250 men-at-arms per base.
Three major groups vie for control of the whole Bone March. The most powerful group are the humanoids under the Orcs of the Vile Rune. The second strongest group are the Orcs of the Death Moon Tribe. Both groups have considerable numbers of various sorts of humanoids serving them. Both are also led by half-orcs and assisted by evil humans. The third power group is a force of ogres and gnolls based in the hills of the Teeser Torrent. This force is commanded by ogre magi. Many independent bands contest any attempt of overlordship, and evil men now control many areas of the march, hoping to displace and enslave the humanoids and rule the whole region.

Condensation of Patterns
As I'm walking around, I hear piano playing.
Really, really good piano playing.
The entire 'mall' is basically built around a circular, very open area. I like the playing so much I break out my bottle of water and sit at a nearby table overlooking the open, central area.
There's a young guy there at the piano, and he's doing it. What's impressive isn't how well he's playing or what he's playing, but that it looks effortless. Just beautiful music... pouring out of that piano and filling every inch of the entire mall. He has his baseball hat open on the piano and there's already a couple of bucks in it. The clean, sanitized, phony as hell mall atmosphere is shattered... real life is spreading throughout the space. Watching people go by, everyone notices the same thing... it's as if the season of Spring is talking to everyone.
While he plays, I notice just a subtle shift in the background sounds of people chattering away and eating their afternoon snack... as if the music is giving them an excuse to actually stop talking and enjoy the flavors in front of them.
A somewhat crazy looking lady suddenly asks me, 'do you think that's appropriate?'
'Huh?'
She points to two teenagers who, in full view of a lot of people, are basically making out right there at their table.
I really just want the crazy lady to get away from me. I understand public discretion, but this lady apparently hasn't stepped out into a warm summer rain in many years, has forgotten how wonderful youth really is, and ought to be thanking the gods that the young still respond to music that occurs in real time. Instead, she picks the creepiest looking stranger in the mall, myself, and just starts talking... go figure.
'I'm just listening to the music, m'am', I tell her. She wanders off. Good riddance.
I continue to watch the piano man. This guy's like an H.P. Lovecraft character. There's something... infectious in what he's playing. It's not quite like the scene in Shawshank Redemption, when Andy puts on the opera record, but the crowd is reacting without really being aware of it.
The reason I post this is the actual location where this all took place. You see, the floor of the ground level is a series of concentric circles. A decorative, sort-of-radial pattern of cut marble slabs turns the floor into a strange mosaic. I found a picture of the floor here... just imagine that the piano is where the Christmas tree is. So inside a circle inside a circle there's this amazing source of this amazing music.
Above the whole thing is a pretty impressive, but awfully mechanical looking cupola... a picture is here. The center is directly above the point where the piano was located. So you have marble from a couple of different places on the planet. Steel, with its own bloody and majestic history. The baked sand of the glass. A few thousand years of glassblowing, metallurgy, architecture, masonry, design, symbolism... and, of course, the piano with its own delicate mathematics vibrating the air to a specific set of patterns.
Overhead, a fast moving but gentle set of storm clouds blew by.
Eventually, of course, the security guard comes over and a few minutes later the guy hurriedly leaves, taking his bounty with him. All in all, he probably made about twelve bucks in half an hour... not a bad rate of pay. You would think that the mall ownership would encourage a musician to come in and play, but they don't.
As I left the structure, a slight rain fell. I thought about all those patterns focusing on one point where, today, some guy wanted to make a few bucks to buy himself a snack playing the piano. Patterns of metal, stone, even air. Glass and steel 'suspended in the sky' while patterns of carved marble lay beneath. All focusing to a center where a well played instrument sat just at the moment when a small storm went by overhead.
It's easy to believe that, even in this place and time, little bits of magic somehow bleed through whatever controlled and measured world we have created. These slivers of magic are small, subtle, and quick. You have to be still and quiet or you'll scare them off, or worse yet, miss them completely.

Meaning . . . IMO, Luke helped us all avoid many deaths and possible TPKs.
What a great experience!
Many thanks to Rob. I learned so very much about gaming and in particular ~ how to run and DM a game that keeps the players on their toes and at the same time - having a blast doing while do so.
Peace frog. :-D

The difference between your average Friday night with friends and GaryCon
It's Garycon 2 Weekend!
"It's like an average Friday night with your friends. You play role playing games, strategy games. A Big popular game for garycon2 is the Circus Maximus game. Except the difference between your average Friday night with friends and GaryCon is that you get to play with legends. By legends I mean Frank Mentzer, Rob Kuntz, Jim Ward, David Kenzer, Jolly Blackburn, Tim Kask, Tom Wham, Flint Dille, Luke Gygax, Ernest Gary Gygax Jr, Jeff Easley."

Armies of Oerth, Part IX: Bandit Kingdoms
Considering the massive size of the following army, I am still using the ratio of 250 men per base.
To continue...
Bandit Kingdoms' Army List
Commander-in-Chief: Baron Skiven (F 11th level) = 1 base
After the Barony of Grosskopf was laid waste by the Duchy of Tenh, the Combination of Free Lords rallied behind Skiven to defend the Bandit Kingdoms. In the course of this action, the Combination abandoned thier assistance to the Horned Society. The Society retaliated by seizing additional lands within the Bandit Kingdoms. Baron Skiven was able to negotiate a truce with the duchy of Tenh on behalf of the Combination. This freed them to retaliate against the Horned Society.
Medium Cavalry: 4,100 = 16 bases
(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
Medium Infantry: 8,900 = 36 bases
(3 models/base: leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
Humanoid Infantry: 510 = 2 bases
(3 models/base: leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)
This is 55 bases with 163 models on them.
The Free Lords of the Combination are a group of at least 17 separate states within the Bandit Kingdoms. As these forces are much smaller individually, they are perfect for using against equally smaller armies, such as the legendary character armies originally given in Parts I through V of this series of articles.
To represent these individual states, I will be using the smaller ratio of 25 men-at-arms per base.
